Since its establishment in 1948, the State of Israel has become an economic
powerhouse and one of the most technologically advanced nations in the world.
Israel is a leader in so many areas of modern life, including notably the vaccination
of its people against Covid-19. Through organisations such as Magen David Adom, it
is a humanitarian nation, always amongst the rst to offer help to other, beleaguered
countries when natural, often climate-related, disasters hit.
We at Magen David Adom UK are immensely proud of MDA’s work in Israel and
worldwide. It is a beacon of light and hope in an often troubled and disrupted region
for most of us. But, amidst what often appears to be chaos, the professionalism and
humanity of MDA’s staff and volunteers calms troubled waters and provides a
metaphor for how the nation and its neighbours should move forward.
The photographs in this, and the rst, edition of Jonathan’s book exemplify what is truly
remarkable about Magen David Adom and its 90-year history – its multiculturalism,
its calm professionalism, its purpose of saving lives – whenever, wherever and however.
Its staff and volunteers are genuine frontline troops in a daily battle to save lives,
preserve life and champion a nation which, above all, values every life.
These photographs are not staged – they reect deeply meaningful glimpses of a
culture of lifesavers, who have put each and every one of their potential differences
(race, religion and creed) to one side in service of saving others’ lives. They reect
the real Israel of today. Not idealised by beautiful pictures of sunny beaches, smiling
suntanned faces or archaeological treasures; but a sophisticated, complex society
which, when the many moments come, put aside differences and come together to
save and preserve the most valuable essence of any society – its citizens’ lives.
Each citizen, regardless of who they are or where they are from.
